# Easy Runs and Heart Rate Zones: Why the Numbers Don't Always Match

The difference between generic zones and tested zones can be substantial.
This matters for training effectiveness. Running too easy becomes genuinely too easy if your zones are miscalibrated. The aerobic stimulus fails. Conversely, targeting zones that don't match your fitness level wastes training stress where it doesn't serve your goals.
Lactate threshold testing or VO2 max testing provides the data needed for accurate zones. Some runners use field tests instead, like the talk test or pace-based assessments, which correlate reasonably well with aerobic capacity without requiring lab equipment.
The lesson extends beyond half marathons. Any runner struggling to stay in prescribed zones should question whether those zones match their actual fitness level.
